Chapter 13

Jessie groaned inwardly. They were practicing how quickly they could put on the seventy-five-pound gear. Normally, it wouldn’t be an issue. It was why she ran. It was why she swam. And it was why she had begun to lift weights on occasion. She knew how much the gear weighed and would have to be able to wear it, hours on end.

It was her bruised ribs that were causing her to inwardly groan. That and the fact Jessie still had no idea who it was that had attacked her. Her emotions had been jumbled causing her to be distracted. There was no scent. There was no sound. There was nothing she could come up with that would help identify whoever it was behind this.

It was now affecting her performance in class. Jessie knew that Kathy knew what had happened. And it could partially excuse her abnormally subpar performance. But she also knew that once she became a firefighter, there were no excuses. Everyone walked around with many bruises, cuts and other aches that could deter their performance.

It was overcoming times when one was aching, for whatever reason, that was the sign of a great firefighter. “Time!” Jessie had managed to perform everything that was required of her. She hoped it would, along with the written and other physical tests, be enough to help her pass. Soon, they would be on vacation. Soon, she would have time to recover.

And soon, Jessie would have time to spend with Thelma. That was the most important thing. While becoming a firefighter was still her dream, it wasn’t everything. Continuing to grow as a person and be truly worthy of Thelma, that’s all that mattered anymore. Though she wasn’t about to give up on either of those dreams.

“Good. I’m sadly going to have to pare the class down just before break.” There were groans. “I know. Not a very Merry Christmas for some.” Kathy hated it. And it was part of why she was already beginning to hate being a teacher. Being a mentor to Jessie wasn’t all that bad. But having to terminate someone’s dreams was not what she liked. “The list will be up by end of class tomorrow. Have a good evening.”

It didn’t take too long for the room to clear. Kathy began taking care of the equipment. She wasn’t surprised when Jessie began to help her. They worked in silence. There was something she needed to speak to her young protégé about. Sadly, her road to becoming a firefighter was not as clear and simple as it had been. “I know you have a shift at the bookstore, but we need to talk.”

Jessie sighed heavily. She had been worried there would be a discussion about her performance. As hard as she tried, Jessie wasn’t performing like she had when her uncle had been helping her. It didn’t matter her life was changing or she was dealing with injuries. All that mattered was she had steadily been slipping, not improving.

The two finished taking care of the equipment before slowly making their way to the parking lot.
